Vilas County is one of the Midwest’s premier snowmobiling destinations. We have over 500 miles of spectacular trails that traverse unspoiled wilderness, crossing undeveloped lakes and connecting to scenic Northwoods communities. In all, Vilas County is home a quarter million acres of public land.
We’re located in the Lake Superior Snowbelt, so we’re buried in feet of snow every winter. We’re also home to some of the best snowmobiling clubs around, and their volunteers work tirelessly to keep trails in top condition.
Our county seat, Eagle River, just happens to be the Snowmobile Capital of the World, hosting events like the Classic Vintage Races and the Amsoil World Championship Snowmobile Derby, as well as other competitive races at the Eagle River Derby Track.
While our trails will take you deep into the wilderness of northern Wisconsin, they also have all the trailside amenities you’ll need for a snowmobile adventure. You’ll find numerous resorts, hotels and cabins with trailside access, and trails connect all 12 of Vilas County’s communities. Fuel and food are also easy to find trailside, and there are some fun places to warm up with other riders just off the trail.
Seasoned riders can find longer-haul routes that can take a weekend or longer to navigate. People new to the trail can find shorter loops that take less time but still give riders a chance to experience why riding here in the heart of Wisconsin’s Northwoods is so fantastic. Snowmobile rentals are available, and Vilas County retailers have all the apparel and gear you’ll need to stay warm and comfortable in the forest.

New riders: The Department of Natural Resources recommends that everyone who is new to snowmobiling take a safety course; it’s the law if you were born on or after January 1, 1985. For more information about Wisconsin’s snowmobile laws, visit the DNR’s website.
