The most versatile way to explore the Vilas County wilderness is also the simplest. Snowshoeing, a low-cost activity that’s easy to learn, will help you access the beauty of northern Wisconsin’s forests in the heart of winter.

Snowshoeing is a great activity, and great exercise for people of all ages. It’s a lot of fun for families, couples and groups of friends but it’s also something you can do on your own. Snowshoers are never alone in the forest; it’s such a quiet activity, wildlife will never hear you coming. On any outing, you might see a variety of beautiful birds and woodland creatures.

It’s a bit more work, and can be a bit more of an adventure, but many people choose to make their own tracks in Vilas County. With more than 240,000 acres of public forests to explore, it’s easy to capture a true wilderness experience in Wisconsin’s Northwoods. You’ll be able to access places like swamps that would be inaccessible other times of the year, and you can even cross frozen lakes—just be sure there is adequate ice.
