Lac du Flambeau in western Vilas County is a great place to get out and play in the winter. Here’s a closer look at some of the great recreational options in this corner of Wisconsin’s Northwoods.
Cross-country skiing & snowshoeing: Strap on a pair of skis and head to the Powell Trails north of Lac du Flambeau to find several loops of ungroomed winter trails to explore. Loops range from 1.8 to 5.1 miles and pass through beautiful Northwoods scenery, including the northern shore of Sherman Lake. To get to the trailhead, follow U.S. Hwy 47 north for about 8 miles, then turn right on Powell Road and follow it for about a mile until you reach the parking area.
Snowmobiling: From Lac du Flambeau, you can follow public trails throughout Vilas County (including a direct route to Lake of the Torches Resort & Casino) and connect to more trails throughout the Northwoods. The Northern Hornshoe Trails Snowmobile Club maintains and grooms nearly 30 miles of trails in and around Lac du Flambeau daily.
