Land O’ Lakes, which sits on the Wisconsin-U.P. border, is a perfect basecamp for exploring the Northwoods and Upper Michigan on your snowmobile.

Northern Hornshoe Trails Snowmobile Club

Launch a snowmobile adventure in Land O’ Lakes this winter.

Land O’ Lakes sits on the border of Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in northern Vilas County, which makes it a perfect basecamp for exploring the wilds of northern Wisconsin and Michigan on your snowmobile.

Starting in Land O’ Lakes, you can take trails west to Manitowish Waters, Mercer and even Ashland, while trails to the east take riders to Iron River or Crystal Falls in the U.P. Pretty much all of Vilas County is open to exploration from Land O’ Lakes, including the nearby communities of Boulder Junction, Sayner-Star Lake and Phelps.

Head north into the U.P. and you’ll find great snowmobiling around Lake Gogebic and Bergland, as well as Bruce Crossing—if you’re up for a longer ride, head all the way to Ontonagon or the Porcupine Mountains. (Note that snowmobiling in Michigan requires a trail permit from the Michigan DNR.)

And don’t forget to download the Map It Vilas County trails app—free for Apple and Android devices—to keep track of where you are on the trails in the Northwoods. (If you’re headed to the U.P., sorry: the app is only designed to be used in Vilas County.)
