Four ways to soak up summer

Vilas County is a place that gets plenty of warm summer weather—and it’s also a place with plenty of ways to cool off. In fact, this area of northern Wisconsin has more than 1,300 lakes, one of the largest concentrations of freshwater lakes on earth. The Northwoods’ waters are cool and refreshing, even on the warmest days. So how to best enjoy this watery paradise? Here are a few ideas:

  • Be a beach bum. Vilas County has scores of beautiful beaches. From perfectly petite, private resort beaches to expansive stretches of public sand, there are plenty of family friendly places to relax in the sand. Here’s a list of beaches worth checking out.
  • Go for a cruise. With more than 1,700 miles of shoreline, the views are virtually endless and the wildlife is abundant—boaters here frequently spot eagles, loons and cranes.
  • Cast a line. Vilas County has some of the best smallmouth bass, walleye and musky fishing in North America as well as exceptional fishing for crappie, bluegill, northern pike and more. It’s also home to knowledgeable guides who will help ensure success.
  • Grab a paddle. There’s no shortage of outstanding canoeing and kayaking in Vilas County! The county’s quiet lakes, many of them non-motor waters, provide smooth floating for canoers and kayakers.
