The days are getting longer, the sun is shining brighter, and the temperatures are beginning to rise—it’s starting to feel like spring in Vilas County. Here’s a look at three things to be excited about when you’re planning your spring getaway to northern Wisconsin.

Awesome angling opportunities

Vilas County is home to more than 1,300 lakes and nearly 75 rivers and streams, so there’s a lot of water to explore, whether you’re casting for a trophy fish or taking a peaceful pontoon ride along the shore. Spring is an especially good time to visit Vilas County if you’re an angler—the general inland fishing opener is the first weekend in May, and musky season in northern lakes starts on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.

In addition to the aforementioned musky, Vilas County is also home to some of the Midwest’s best fishing for smallmouth bass and walleye. Many Vilas County lodging properties sit on the shores of great fishing lakes, and local guides and bait shops have everything you need for a successful fishing trip.

Amazing views on scenic drives

Get a great perspective on the changing of the seasons when you explore Vilas County’s scenic drives. When spring rolls around, you’ll be able to take in stunning views of Northwoods lakes, forests coming to life after the long winter, and the return of native wildlife like birds, deer, and more along these routes.

Great times on the trails

Beat the crowds and explore northern Wisconsin’s great trails this spring. Lace up a good pair of boots and get out on more than 60 multi-use trails throughout Vilas County. You’ll find everything from short lakeside strolls to longer treks through the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest.

If you’re exploring Vilas County’s trails, don’t forget to download the free Map It Vilas County app, which is available for Apple and Android devices. With the app, you’ll be able to find recreational trails by location, activity (including hiking, biking, paddling, ATVing/UTVing & more), length, amenities, and more. You’ll also be able to navigate the trails even if you don’t have a cell signal.

Those are just a few of the things Vilas County visitors have to look forward to this spring. The Northwoods is also filled with fun events, great places to stay, and much more.
