ATVing and UTVing are great ways to explore the beautiful scenery of northern Wisconsin in any season. Riders will find outstanding trails and road routes in Vilas County year-round. Here’s a closer look at where to ride in the Northwoods.

Road routes

All Vilas County highways—except those in the town of Lac du Flambeau—are open to ATV and UTV traffic year round:

  • County Highway A
  • County Highway B
  • County Highway C
  • County Highway E
  • County Highway G
  • County Highway H (town of Boulder Junction only)
  • County Highway J
  • County Highway K
  • County Highway M
  • County Highway N
  • County Highway O
  • County Highway P
  • County Highway S
  • County Highway W

ATVs and UTVs are not allowed on numbered highways (U.S. Highways 45 and 51 and State Highways 17, 32, 47, 70, and 155) with some exceptions:

  • Phelps: State Highway 17 from County Highway E to Deerskin Road
  • Plum Lake: State Highway 155 from County Highway N to Plum Lake Drive
  • St. Germain: State Highway 70 from State Highway 155 to Straight Away Road; State Highway 155 from State Highway 70 to Birchwood Drive

Not all town roads are open to ATV and UTV traffic in Vilas County; please check with local municipalities or area ATV clubs to verify which roads can be used.

Off-road trails

Off-road trails for ATVs and UTVs connect the Vilas County communities of Arbor Vitae, St. Germain, Eagle River, Conover, Phelps, and Land O’ Lakes. Opening date for trails is dependent on weather and trail conditions.
