The 11 clubs of the Vilas County Snowmobile Alliance are adding additional safety measures at snowmobile trail lake access points across Vilas County.
Flashing beacon lights will be placed on both sides of the trail at the shoreline of lake access points. These beacons are visible from two nautical miles away and will flash in a sequence of red, white, and green. The beacons will let snowmobilers know where it is safe to cross lakes, where the shorelines are, and where lake exits are.
Additionally, speed limit signs will be installed at lake/trail access points to remind riders that the speed limit at night is 55 mph per Wisconsin state law. This speed limit was put in place to protect riders from running behind the headlights of their vehicles and create safer riding conditions at night.
Please stay off lakes and water crossings until they are marked and obey the 55 mph speed limit at night.
Ride responsibly—off-trail riding is trespassing and could result in the closure of trails or loss of trail access, as well as fines for violators.
